The rules of pickleball might seem complex at first. However, after playing just a few games, you should have no trouble following them. The rules for doubles play are highlighted in the numbered items below. For a complete listing of the rules, follow the link at the bottom of this page.

1. Points are only scored when you or your partner serve. A game is to 11 points and you must win by 2 points.

2. Serves are made underhand below your waist. Your serve must land in the service court for the serve to be good. Both you and your partner get one chance to serve. As long as you keep making points, you keep serving. When you and your partner have both lost their point, the serve reverts to the other team.

3. After a legal serve, the serving team must allow the returned service shot to bounce anywhere in their court prior to striking the ball. After this point, any returned shots can be hit prior to bouncing on the court surface (volley).

4. Any returned volley shots must be made behind the volley line which is the line located 7 feet behind the net. Shots which bounce in the zone between the net and the volley line can be returned by stepping in front of the volley line.
